Education Opportunities in Upper Silesia

Katowice is an important educational centre with lots of institutions offering primary, secondary and higher education. The oldest ones are the state universities which, having the well-earned reputation for outstanding academic achievement and innovation, attract loads of applicants for Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs in a wide variety of fields.

The major research and education centre, with approximately 45,000 students and 1,900 academic teachers, is the University of Silesia. It is also one of the largest universities in Poland with its campuses in Chorzow, Sosnowiec, Katowice and Cieszyn. The University of Silesia consists of 12 faculties and a few multi-disciplinary schools. It offers courses in 32 fields of studies and 91 specialities, a few of which taught in English are also available to international students. The academic degrees of Bachelor, Master and PhD can be earned here.
 
Moreover, the University of Silesia promotes cooperation with other universities and research institutions from all over the world. Recently, over 400 research projects have been carried out with partners from 44 countries. Moreover, the academics of the University of Silesia are actively engaged in major EU research and education programmes. For those who would like to get acquainted with the Polish language and culture, there is the Summer School for Polish Language, Literature and Culture with a varied selection of language courses, cultural events, excursions and leisure activities.

Katowice with its Karol Adamiecki University of Economics has a lot offer to those who would like to specialize in the fields of Economics, Management, Finance and Insurance. Apart from Bachelor's, Master's, PhD and other study programmes, students can participate in increasingly attractive exchange programmes and internships. The extensive study offer, combined with a varied social programme targeted at foreigners makes the Karol Adamiecki University of Economics popular with students from all over the globe (Japan, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, France, Spain, etc.). Introductory courses of the Polish Language are also on the university offer. Moreover, it is possible for foreigners to pursue PhD studies in English, French, German and Russian.

The Medical University of Silesia, with 5 campuses in Katowice, Zabrze, Bytom and Sosnowiec, is one of the largest medical schools in Poland. It offers studies in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Analytics and Public Health. Since 1996 the Medical University of Silesia provides courses in English to the students in the Faculty of Medicine in Katowice which are certified by the US Department of Education. There is also a varied selection of post-graduate trainings on offer.

The renowned Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music offers both full and part time courses in twelve specializations within two of its departments, i.e. the Vocal-Instrumental Department and Composition, Interpretation, Education and Jazz Department. Since the Academy meets the European Credit Transfer System requirements, the students are given an excellent opportunity to continue their study programmes abroad or select the elective courses in the specialities they are particularly interested in. Thanks to its well-qualified training staff, modern teaching standards and co-operation with partner universities, the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music is ranked as one of the leading music academies in Poland. Moreover, the Katowice Academy of Music boasts such prominent alumni as Krystian Zimerman, Henryk Mikołaj Gorecki, Wojciech Kilar and Krzysztof Jablonski who have made their alma mater famous all over the world. Individual courses aimed for foreigners are also on the offer of this renowned Academy of Music.
 
Another artistic university in Silesia is the Academy of Fine Arts, once a branch of the Cracow Fine Arts Academy. Though established in 2001, it is an artistic educational institution with long traditions and well-qualified staff. The students are offered studies in the Faculty of Graphic Arts, Painting and Design. The successes of the students in international competitions and exhibitions make the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice famous all over the world.

Katowice also boasts its Academy of Physical Education, one of six sports-related higher education institutions in Poland. It offers intramural and extramural studies in the fields of Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Management and Marketing.

As far as the opportunities for pursuing the studies of Sciences are concerned, of all the technical schools, the Silesian University of Technology is the most famous one. It is also ranked as one of the largest technical universities in Poland. It consists of 12 faculties, 9 of which are situated in Gliwice and Rybnik, whereas the remaining ones can be found in Zabrze, Katowice and Bytom. One can take up studies in as many as 21 engineering fields. These are as follows: Architecture, Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy and Environmental Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Mining and Geology, Materials Science and Metallurgy, Organisation and Management and Transport. Moreover, the students can choose from undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses. As for the faculties available to foreigners, the following ones offer courses run in English: Automatic Control, Chemistry, Civil Engineering and Electronics and Computer Science.
The Silesian University of Technology is known for its well-qualified staff, international cooperation with foreign partners, highly developed research tailored to the needs of the industry, which makes it an attractive educational institution.

Apart from the well-established state universities, in Upper Silesia there are a lot of non-public higher education institutions with courses in a variety of fields.
